Tragedy & Lessons Not Learned

December 19, 2012

In light of the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticuit, I thought I would re-post an essay that I wrote on October 16, 2007. I wrote the essay out of the frustration I felt about all of the school shootings that had occurred up to that point and the seeming lack of interest on the part of lawmakers or parents to advocate on behalf of safety in our schools.

The Right to Bear Arms is in the Constitution.  I do not believe that the right will go anywhere anytime soon; however, modificaitons and regulations can and should be placed upon gun owners, especially regulation in regard to access of the firearms and as well as taking semiautomatic military weapons off the market.  Your Right to Bear Arms is not going to be taken away; however, your right should be regulated.  Why did all these children have to needlessly die over the years because some suits in Washington didn't want to anger the NRA or its lobbyists back when Columbine happened?  I guess the massacres have to just keep getting bigger and bigger to satisfy the media's desire for a juicy story and now killers try and top one another with a more grand and destructive plan each time.  Currently, new regulation legislation is non-existent.  If something isn't done, we all will have blood on our hands for not ensuring the protection of our children.

Oct 16, 2007 Our Schools Are NOT Safe Enough........ Current mood:shocked

WE NEED TO WAKE UP AROUND THE WORLD!

As many of you may realize, school shootings have been on the rise now for over ten years. What you may not realize is that many of our schools are unable to secure enough money to fund security or to improve their current security systems and protocols.

My Mom sent me this email…..She was enraged at how many school shootings there have been over the last twelve years! I read the email and of course, I agreed. However, I noticed that there was a recent shooting missing from the list. I decided to add it. When I went to research the shooting, guess how many shootings I had to add to the growing list? As protectors of our children, we need to start campaigning for additional funding to allow our school systems to operate at the utmost security. Vote for tax increases that fund the security necessary to protect our children. Their very futures are being threatened by not protecting them in the very place they go to learn about the world. Children should never have to go to school fearful of what will happen to them or others during the day.

As children, we have never known the fear of going to school and being killed or harmed. As parents, we have grown up and now have fear for our children's safety at school. We do not know how they feel living as children during this turbulent time of their generation. It is so important to open up a dialogue with your children about how they feel. Many of these crimes could have been avoided if someone had taken the time to notice the signs. Our society has been brought to a point where we cannot turn back the clock, we must stay one step ahead. We must do this to protect our children. It is naïve to think it could never happen in your town………….

46.)  Newtown, Connecticuit - A 20 year old man shot and killed his mother and then stole her firearms, taking them to the elementary school where she worked.  He was buzzed into the school and violence ensued.  By the time the carnage was over, 20 innocent children between the ages of 6 and 7 were killed alongside their principal and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  This is the deadliest school shooting only behind the Virgina Tech murders.

IT'S PAST TIME TO DO SOMETHING TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN FROM VIOLENCE IN THEIR OWN SCHOOLS!

Children are taught that a place of education is a safe and nurturing place.  Now, instead, we must attempt to explain to them how something like this could possibly happen in a supposed safe and nurturing place.  We are their protectors and we are all failing. It's time to REALLY DO SOMETHING! NO GUN REFORMS HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED SINCE COLUMBINE. That was 1999 and that's one too many dead kids folks.

I also believe that our health care system in the United States continues to be a joke and therefore, citizens are either getting inadequate mental health treatment or none at all.  Perhaps if we could treat mental illness, also, these disturbing instances will not continue to happen.

And for all you gun nuts out there who think you ought to have the right to carry around a semiautomatic military weapon, let me say this to you:  Just pray that it is NEVER your deceased child whose bullet wounds are being stuffed with compound and filler just to make their body presentable to those seeking closure. Sleep with that swirling around in your thoughts tonight....
